The 9th National Congress Meeting of Chinese Physics Society was held in Nanjing from Sep. 17t to Sep.23, 2007. The project "STUDY ON THERMOACOUSTIC COOLING’S KEY TECHNOLOGY" finished Prof. Ercang LUO’s team wins the highest award of Chinese Physics Society--- HU GANGFU EXPERIMENTAL PHYSICS AWARD.
Have developed independently in China, Prof LUO and his team have achieved important advance in thermoacoustic cooling technology as follows: (i) Proposing a so-called "Energy-focused Thermoacoustic Heat Engine" capable of achieving a pressure ratio of above 1.3 with helium and 1.4 with nitrogen, and in the meantime  increasing thermoacoustic conversion efficiency by about 20% -50%; (ii) Proposing an efficient coupling device, a so-called "Acoustical Pressure Wave Amplifier" for thermoacoustically driven coolers, which was experimentally demonstrated to improve the global efficiency by 2 to 3 times; (3) Developing the thermoacoustically driven, totally non-moving-part cryocoolers below LN2 temperature and below LH2 temperature for the first time in the world. Furthermore, the pioneering work on developing a heat-driven room-temperature cooler with highest efficiency and cooling capacity was conducted, which a good prospects as an enable alternative technology of conventional CFC-based refrigeration in future.
The Chinese Physical Society’s HU GANGFU EXPERIMENTAL PHYSICS AWARD was founded for encouraging those scientists who have made excellent work in experimental physics on behalf of memorizing the first-generation, famous Chinese physicist, Mr. HU GANGFU’s huge contribution in the initiation of Modern Chinese Physics research and the foundation of Chinese Physical Society. This award was started in 1989 and is issued every two years. Two academians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof. Chaosheng HONG and Yuan ZHOU who are working at the TIPC/CAS, won the first award.
