Recently, with the leadership of professor Zhengyu Yang, researchers from Bio-energy and oil-field chemistry research group have succeeded in their test for industrial simulation of a manufacturing facility that could annually synthesize 300 tons of high-quality fuel from biomass with the technology and equipment they have developed.

Major breakthroughs have been made in many areas such as reactor designing, oil phase separating, gases and char utilizing, oil bleaching, chemicals separating, temperature controlling pressure holding and so on. The successful trial of this industrial simulation provided a solid foundation for the industrial production of PBF in near future and marked that the technique of PBF were driving to maturity.

Based on the natural inner structure of biomass, the PBF was obtained by catalytic recombination of all kinds of plant biomass such as straw leaves and bark et al without addition of hydrogen. The composition of PBF was very similar to that of petroleum with the yield of about 15%. Different types of gasoline and diesel oil can be obtained by rectification.

The successful test for industrial simulation verified that the technique of preparing PBF was a green path to convert biomass resources to renewable energy. No desulfurization and dechlorination treatment were involved in the oil upgrading process due to the trace amount of sulfur and chloride in biomass. The char products with high content of carbon components can be made into briquettes to provide heat to the whole reaction. And the ash can be made into building materials after the char products burning out. Furthermore, this process also realized continuous solid feed technique and zero wastewater discharge. The success of industrial simulation fully proved that the technique of preparing PBF was an environmental protecting, energy saving and green path to exploit biomass resources.
