At the invitation of Key Laboratory of Cryogenics, TIPC, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof. Ho Jung Paik from University of Maryland,College Park paid a visit to Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry (TIPC), CAS on May. 23, 2011 and gave a wonderful lecture entitled Precision Tests of Laws of Gravitation and High-Resolution Gravity Mapping Using Superconductivity Accelerometers.
The superconducting accelerometer technology can be used to test the Equivalence Principle. With a superconducting differential accelerometer, a five orders of magnitude improvement of sensitivity over that obtained for ground experiments is achieved by space based experiments, which allow for very soft superconducting magnetic suspension of test masses due to low-g environment. The superconducting gravity gradiometer can also be used to map the gravity field of the Earth and other planets. Magnetically levitated test masses will improve the sensitivity by two orders of magnitude than that obtained for original developed devices with mechanically suspended test masses.
