December 11-12, 2006, Beijing Friendship Hotel, Beijing, China

Sponsored by
Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS)
National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Japan
New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), Japan

Hosted by
Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry (IPC) of CAS

CAS attaches great importance and support on this symposium. Bai Chunli, the vice president of CAS, interviewed the executive directors of NEDO at Diaoyutai Hotel on Dec 10. The symposium opened on Dec 11. Leaders from CAS, Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), committee of National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), National Center for NanoScience and Technology and IPC, addressed on the symposium and listened to some academic reports. About eight experts and leaders from institutes of CAS and AIST took part in the meeting.
The symposium was presided by Prof. He Junhui from IPC and Prof. Ryoji Funahashi from AIST. All the experts at the symposium from China and Japan are outstanding researchers in the field of nanotechnology application in energy and environment. During the symposium, experts from China and Japan made nineteen detailed reports on the nanotechnology application in energy and environment. Specifically, the reports on the application in energy included thermoelectric conversion, solar cell, fuel cell, energy storage, hydrogen energy, catalyst and its surface characteristic, bioenergy, and hydrogen generation from water splitting by photocatalysis. And the reports on the application in environment had photodegradation of contaminants (water and soil treatments, etc), environmental catalysts, photocatalysis, exhaust control, air particulates and their effects on human health. The topics of the report also covered the synthesis, characterization, and functional research of nanomaterials. These reports displayed not only the new achievement on the above research fields but also the industrialization progress and its development direction in the future of both China and Japan. After the thematic reports, the experts had an ardent discussion on the cooperation between China and Japan and program exploiture on application field of nanotechnology in the future. Finally they came to an agreement on both concrete cooperation fields and cooperation mode.
Experts of both sides appraised this symposium highly. They thought the researchers from both China and Japan working in the related fields of energy technology, environment technology and nanotechnology had one in-depth communication and discussion in cross subject research field. The researchers could cooperate in some interesting and new problem by learning from each other after the symposium. Moreover, this symposium built a bridge for both sides of China and Japan in future academic research, industrialization, and international cooperation. On the morning of Dec 13, Japanese experts, accompanied by Chinese personnel, visited some laboratories of IPC of CAS, institute of chemistry Chinese academy of science and institute of physics Chinese academy of science.
