For years, with the innovation of nonlinear optical (NLO) crystal and all solid-state laser source as the leading role, Our lab has fostered the development of related crystal materials, solid-state laser and its application, the study on the structure-property relationship of opto-electical functional crystals, the molecular design theory of functional crystals, and advanced crystal growth and post –processing technique. We investigated the high power all solid-state laser technique, beam quality control technique, and wide range frequency conversion technique for practical application; We have also developed novel  synthetic crystals and laser devices that can produce ultroviolet, deep ultraviolet, visible, infrared, widely tunable and high power coherent laser ouuput. Through the collaboration with related groups, We have expanded the application of these innovative devices. We have achieved internationally leading or advanced results in many areas, including the discovery, growth and application of the KBBF family deep ultraviolet NLO crystals, all solid- state full color laser display system, growth of large scale LBO crystal, the search for new generation NLO crystals, and the high power solid-state laser and its frequency conversion technique, etc.

Currently, there are 33 staff members in our lab, which include one member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, two members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 9 professors and 7 associate professors.

In Recent 5 years, We have undertook 45 national and provincial projects, published 310 papers and 5 books; We have also applied 89 patents, of which 46 were granted; we have been awarded one 2nd class National Scientific Technology Progress Award, one 1st class Provincial Scientific Technology Progress, one Hong Kong “Qiu-Shi” Award for outstanding science and technology group achievement one HLHL(Ho Leung Ho Lee) Prize for science and technology progress, as well as others.

The opto-electric materials stuided in our lab are the fundenmantal materials for opto-electric techniques. All solid state laser, which uses laser crystal and NLO crystal as the activation media and the high power semiconductor laser as the pumping source, is an important recent development direction in opto-electric techniques. all solid-state laser has been one of the strategically supporting techniques for high-tech inductry, national defense equipment, cutting-edge technique for science and technology. It can promote the developments of many areas including information, advanced fabrication technique, medicine, scientific instruments, and military equipments and open up huge new market and thus has been highly valued in every developed country in the world.
