The laboratory was formerly the Cryogenic Laboratory of Chinese Academy of Sciences, which was founded by Academician Hong Chaosheng in 1980. As the only comprehensive research unit for cryogenics in China, it has made great contribution to the projects of “Two bombs and One satellite” and national superconducting initiative research. Besides the research activities, the laboratory also has a center for Cryogenic metrology. The laboratory is the chief unit for the Committee of Refrigeration and Cryogenics of Chinese Association of Refrigeration.

The laboratory has a world-known fame with excellent research on Cryogenics. The staff members include many preeminent scholars, including two academicians, two national distinguished young scientist, etc. Among young researchers under the age of thirty-five, there are two enrollees of Beijing Sci-Tech Nova Program and nine persons have been or are being supported by the general fund of National Natural Science Foundation.

During the last five years, the laboratory has achieved many advances in innovative cryogenic refrigeration technologies, cryo-biological engineering, cryogenic heat transfer, cryogenic functional materials, superconductor cooling, cryogenic clear energy and large-scale cryogenic engineering. These research achievements have won the laboratory many national and provincial awards and resulted in great influence world-wide.

The laboratory has undertook more than 60 important research projects.
