Breakthrough Progress Made in Volume Production Technology of Low Loss Step-index Type PMMA Optical Fiber

     The Research Center of Organic Optical Waveguide Devices and Materials, headed by Professor Zhen ZHEN and Xinhou LIU in Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistryl Chinese Academy of Sciences tackled the key technique in direct production of step-index PMMA fiber through bulk polymerization. The innovative technology consists of purification of MMA raw materials based on the single molecule transfer and diffusion, and preparation of high-purity fiber grade PMMA fiber materials based on lamina thin layer bulk polymerization, as well as preparation of the cladding materials to match the core. The center owns technologies, processes and relevant equipment for the production of high-purity fiber grade PMMA materials (core  materials) and the cladding material. 
     Recently, a step-index PMMA fiber with optical loss of 170~200dB/km has been successfully produced at self-made fully automated assembly line. in the scale of 100,000 meters per day. It is anticipated that the assembly line could produce step-index PMMA optical fiber with optical loss less than 150dB/km under optimal conditions, which represents the level similar to the best products in the world. Overall it indicates that China will become the one in the world able to produce the high quality of low loss step PMMA fiber with independent intellectual property rights. The industrial scale production is expected in the near future.
