Study on nonlinear optical crystal lithium triborate (LBO)

   Beijing Center for Crystal Research and Development, Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has made great breakthrough in the study of nonlinear optical crystal lithium triborate (LBO). They have solved the key point of growing large-scale, high quality LBO crystals though three-year consistent effort. By using new flux system and growth technology, LBO single crystal up to 146×145×62 mm3 in size and 1116.8g in weight, was successfully grown and exceeded the results reported more than 500g in weight. LBO single crystal is one of the most important materials for all-solid-state laser. This achievement pushes the study of China’s brand LBO single crystal to a new stage, and greatly promotes development of LBO related industry. Meanwhile as an alternatively significant frequency conversion material, it will play an active role in the progress of large-aperture, high power laser technology and optical devices.
