The Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (TIPCCAS) was founded in Beijing in June 1999 on the basis of the former Institute of Photographic Chemistry, the former Cryogenic Laboratory, as well as some relevant departments from Beijing Research and Development Center of Artificial Crystals and from the Institute of Chemistry of CAS.

The first unit of TIPC, CAS: The Institute of Photographic Chemistry, CAS

The Institute of Photographic Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was founded in 1975, on the basis of former Organic Chemistry Research Centre and Catalysis Research Centre of Institute of Chemistry, CAS. Mainly focusing on the development of photographic materials, the Institute has formed three academic directions including Photographic Chemistry, Photochemical, Colloid and Interface Chemistry. The Photochemical Open Laboratory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Colloid and Interface Science Joint Laboratory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and China National Petroleum Corporation and the Photographic Materials Testing Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences are in here. The Chinese Society of Photographic Science and Engineering, the Committee of Photochemistry of the Chinese Chemical Society, the Committee of Photochemistry of the Chinese Solar Energy Society, the LB membrane Professional Group of the Chinese Chemical Society are affiliated to the Institute. The Institute publishes the journal Imaging Science and Photochemistry.

The successive leaders:

Gao Kun (1975-1977)

Deng Qiming (1977-1982)

Director:Cao Yi (1983-Dec, 1992)

Director:Tong Zhenhe (Dec, 1992-June, 1999)

The second unit of TIPC, CAS: Cryogenic Laboratory

Cryogenic Laboratory was founded in May, 1982. Its predecessor is low-temperature physics laboratory of the Institute of Physics, CAS and a gas factory of CAS. Taking low-temperature physics and cryogenic technology as the main subjects, the laboratory commits in basic and laboratory research on cryogenic technology.

The successive leaders:

Director: Hong Chaosheng (September, 1982- February, 1989)

(Honorary Director, February, 1989- June, 1999)

Director: Zhou Yuan (February, 1989- June, 1999)

The third unit of TIPC, CAS: Beijing Research and Development Center of Artificial Crystals, CAS

Founded in March, 1999, Beijing Research and Development Center of Artificial Crystals of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is based on Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter, Chinese Academy of Sciences and the relevant departments of University of Science and Technology of China. CHEN Chuangtian, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, fellow of the Third World Academy of Sciences, is the first leader of the center.

The fourth unit of TIPC, CAS: National Research Center of Engineering Plastics

National Research Center of Engineering Plastics once adhered to Institute of Chemistry, CAS. It was started in 1989 and was officially approved to establish by the State Planning Commission. Its predecessor is composite material laboratory of Institute of Chemistry, CAS and Beijing Puli Development Center of high polymer material, which is attached to ICCAS. With the implementation of the CAS‘Knowledge Innovation Program’, the center belonged to TIPCCAS from 2000.
