Prof. Yushan Yan from University ofDelaware Visits TIPCCAS

Update time:2011-11-11

Invited by Key Laboratory of Photochemical Conversion and Optoelectronic Materials, Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences ( TIPC, CAS),  Prof. Yushan Yan  from University of Delaware visited Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (TIPC, CAS) on Nov. 10  and gave a wonderful lecture entitled Fuel Cells, Energy Storage, and Solar Hydrogen: Toward a Safe, Clean, and Sustainable Energy Future.

In the lecture, Prof. Yushan Yanintroduced his recent work on hydroxide exchange membrane (HEMs). HEMs, when used in fuel cells (HEMFCs), allow the platinum catalysts to be replaced by non-platinum-group-metals such as nickel and silver while the expensive fluorinated Nafion membrane substituted by a hydrocarbon membrane, thus drastically reducing the cost of fuel cells and making them potentially economically viable. HEMs can also be used in electrolyzers or flow batteries for large scale solar/wind electricity storage and for solar hydrogen generation.

Prof. Yushan Yan received his B. S. in Chemical Physics from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1988, and his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology in 1997. His research focuses on zeolite thin films for semiconductors and aerospace applications and new materials for fuel cells, energy storage and solar hydrogen generation.
